Green Friday 2021 - Sustainable Alternative to Black Friday

Green Friday 2021 - Sustainable Alternative to Black Friday

You've heard of Black Friday, but what about Green Friday? The incentivised spending period in November that occurs annually includes Singles Day, Black Friday and Cyber Monday and encourages many to spend, spend, spend.

The Green Friday movement arose in response to Black Friday´s compulsive consumption and proposes an environmentally effective alternative of responsible and conscious consumption on that same day. Green Friday, is an initiative which sees brands give back to the environment.

What if we use Black Friday to think about the impact our purchases have on the world and how we can take action to help the planet and those around us instead?

Enter the era of Green Friday

An essential step in changing our mindset is to realise how our consumer habits can impact the environment on the most popular shopping day of the year - Black Friday. It will take a long time to change consumerism as we know it, but the increasing popularity of Green Friday is a powerful, positive way of pushing back on materialism. Let’s go green!

What actually is Black Friday?

Black Friday is celebrated a day after Thanksgiving. It is observed prominently in the United States but over the years the tradition has spread globally, including Australia. The day marks the beginning of the holiday season. Recently, Black Friday has spawned another shopping binge known as Cyber Monday.

Why does Black Friday have such a negative impact on the environment?

Black Friday has become one of the symbols of modern consumerism. We tend to buy without thinking, unconcerned of the possible environmental and social impacts that this wastefulness of resources can generate.

“Black Friday represents a sore spot in an industry that runs on overproduction. When we buy into the seemingly good deals, we send a message to brands that it’s okay for them to thoughtlessly produce, at the cost of people and the planet, because we’ll help them get rid of their stockpiles as long as they are discounted steeply.”

The Green Friday movement

The Green Friday movement arose in response to Black Friday´s compulsive consumption and proposes an environmentally effective alternative of responsible and conscious consumption on that same day. Green Friday, is an initiative which sees brands give back to the environment.  The purpose of the day is to reflect on what and why you are buying. And, to try and make better purchasing decisions that support small or local brands and good causes.
