How to Experience Summer Festivals and Stick to Your Health Goals

The season is in full swing. As the weather heats up, so does the lineup of summer festivals.

There’s nothing that feels more like summer than the warmth of sunshine on your face, listening to the newest tunes, surrounded by a group of your closest mates. But throw in some often-greasy festival food and a few expensive cans of beer, multiplied by each festival weekend, and you’ve got yourself a slightly unhealthy season ahead.

The good news is, you don’t have to forgo the epic season of summer music festivals or your health goals with the proper preparation in place.

Summer is undeniably a season where you want to look and feel your best, and with these helpful tips, you’ll be making the most of every sun-filled weekend at a festival.

Eat a Delicious, Nutritious Breakfast

You’re going to need a whole lot of energy to dance on your feet all day and night long. Fuel up first thing in the morning with a big feed, such as poached eggs on multigrain toast, or if you prefer something quicker to digest, opt for a smoothie packed with healthy fats and protein to keep you alert.

Eat a delicious, nutritious breakfast.

Meditate Before the Festival Kicks Off

At home or on route, breathe and centre yourself before a big day of socialising. Festivals can be overwhelming for even the most confident, so if you know you can get a little off-centre when it comes to crowds, get grounded and try a meditation technique or alternative pre-festival.

Meditate before the festival kicks off.

Drink Water Between Alcoholic Beverages

Whether you’re sipping on a tin of cider or sharing a cool jug of Pimms with your friends, between each drink, chug down some H20. Make a pact with your friends that you’ll each carry bottled water and drink half the bottle between every alcoholic beverage. Every good festival has a number of hydration stations where you can refill your bottle or rehydrate at a water fountain.

Take Drinking Out of the Equation

With so many jam-packed festival lineups in the coming months, it’s hard to pick just one -- especially when there’s friends involved. But in reality, hitting the booze at each festival will eat up your weekends in the sun more than what’s desirable. So take it easy and bring your happy, summery vibes to the festival alcohol-free. Many festivals are well-equipped with a juice van or a lemonade stand -- you’ll keep hydrated and you can decreased the risk of waking up with a headache significantly.

Dance Like No One is Watching

An all-day gym class, but way more fun! Rework your mindset for your next festival and use the music and energy to get in a workout. Jump around, throw your arms in the air, and most importantly, have fun! You’ll be working up a sweat in no time, and with the added bonus of a Vitamin D injection.

Be Sun-smart and Reapply Often

All this talk of basking in the sunshine and no talk of protecting your skin. This is absolutely crucial if you want to end summer on a healthy high. It’s easy to forget after being out in the sun all day, dancing and enjoying yourself, the damage it can do to your health. Bring a tube of travel sunscreen with you to each festival, reapplying often.

Other sun-smart essentials:

  • Wearing a cap will ensure your scalp with remain unscathed and it will collect any sweat you work up from dancing.
  • Sunglasses are not just a fashion statement -- make sure you have a pair handy that have appropriate UV protection. You don’t want to be squinting all day or damaging your eyesight.

Be sun-smart and reapply often.

Eat as Clean as Possible

If there’s a healthy option, take it. As fit and healthy living becomes more prevalent amongst young people, more festivals are taking chances on vendors with gluten free, vegan and salad options. Think of the feeling you’ll get with a stomach full of hot chips or gozleme -- not very nice when you’re trying to bust a move on the dance floor.

Get snack-happy.

Do your research before each festival and take note whether or not you can bring in any external food into the venue. Just like a sports grounds, you may be allowed to pack a few muesli bars or sandwiches to re-energise you throughout the day.

Other easy-to-pack healthy snacks:

  • Bananas -- filled with potassium
  • Oranges, mandarins -- packed with vitamin C, as you get amongst the crowds
  • Hummus and cucumbers -- easy to carry, great source of protein, fibre and hydration
  • Almonds -- a delicious energy booster

What does eco sexuality actually mean?

What does eco sexuality actually mean?

If you haven’t heard of eco-sexuality, you’re certainly not alone! It is basically an umbrella term for those who view nature as ‘lover earth’ not ‘mother earth’ and values it as a source of love and comfort, rather than a resource to exploit.  There’s a huge spectrum of the ways in which people go about exploring their ecosexuality - some may indulge in water play, others may opt for the most eco-friendly, ethical and sustainable sexual wellness products, and other’s choose to literally have sex with the earth, air and sea. Like most things when it comes to sex, how you go about ‘doing it’ is completely up to you and those involved! Whilst it may sound radical verging on wacky, there’s a lot we can learn from this movement that encourages more ethical and sustainable choices in life and sex. Read on for everything you need to know and how eco sexuality may apply to you - perhaps without even knowing it quite yet!  Why are people doing it?  The world benefits anytime people are more connected, conscious of the resources they use. Now more than ever before, people are aware of the quality and ingredients in their sexual wellness products. For a long time, ethical and body safe products were unaffordable and priced at premium prices point. I’ve noticed there’s been a huge shift, with plenty of eco-friendly options available that won’t break the bank. People are opting for non-toxic, non-porous, vegan and body-safe materials and ingredients. They are choosing safer options for their bodies as well as limiting harm on the environment.  I’ve also noticed people engaging in these practices because they have felt disconnected from their body and the world around them. The foundations of ecosexualty have allowed them to get back into their body and connect with presence and awareness to the land in which they live. When investing in products - is there anything I should be looking for? I’m asked this question all the time - and it is VITAL you know exactly what is in your sexual wellness products. There are so many lubes, toys, gels and condoms containing toxic and dangerous ingredients that may dry out your genitals, cause irritation or harm and ultimately they don't feel that great either. When it comes to condoms, you should be looking for 100% natural rubber latex vegan-friendly condoms with no nasty synthetic ingredients. When shopping for lube it’s essential you know what ingredients they use - you must always stay away from petrochemicals and parabens in the ingredient list as these can cause harm to your body and disrupt the vagina’s flora and pH balance.  How do people ‘do it’ with the earth?  People often assume sex is about penetration, but this is just one way to have sex! There are so many activities that can be considered sexual; touch, movement, dry humping, stimulating erogenous zones, kissing, erotic breathing… really the list goes on. The practice of making love to the earth is finding ways to sensually enjoy anything: allowing the sweet smell of a flower to fill your nostrils, fingering a dewy tree, opening your legs under a stream of water, eating a berry to ignite sensation in your mouth. It’s not so much about being penetrated by a branch - it’s really about mindfulness and embodiment. Now that we’re on the topic of sticking a small tree inside you, there are a few things I should note. You must be careful when putting anything near your genitals, anus and other sensitive areas.  Be cautious of any harmful bacteria and sharp objects. If you plan to put something inside you it must be body safe, have a flared base and cause no unwanted pain or discomfort.  Is this the future of human sexuality?  The future of sex is changing and our access to high quality, body safe and eco friendly products is easier than ever before. So you can ditch those memories you have of condoms and lubes that felt gross or tacky. I have seen from the frontline how these new products are transforming human sexuality because they feel exceptional, they’re good for you and keep you safe - the ideal combo for any sexual experience.  Exploring eco sexuality is one way of motivating one another to do our bit for the planet, explore sexual liberation and get a kick out of it too. And if that’s the future of sex, it looks pretty bright to me.  Guest Editor Georgia GraceCertified Australian Sex Coach, writer & speaker
